The seventh episode of Severance season two delves into the darkest sector of Lumon Industries: the enigmatic testing floor. In Severance 2×07, Lumon’s tests reveal experiments that go beyond simple memory separation, focusing on the fragmentation of the human mind and intensifying psychological and emotional manipulation.
But what really happens there? And why is Gemma subjected to these experiments?
In this episode, we discover that Gemma is the only visible resident of the testing floor, but strong hints suggest that others have been there before. The place operates as a true psychological prison, where every detail is designed to prevent escapes.
Dr. Mauer and the nurse are the staff members responsible for monitoring the experiments and ensuring that Gemma remains under control. They maintain constant surveillance to prevent any attempt at escape.
The Security System Prevents Escape
When Gemma tries to use the elevator to reach the main floor, Lumon’s security system automatically resets her mind. As a result, she reverts to Miss Casey, with no memory of what happened in the testing floor.
If this technology can erase memories with such precision, imagine what Lumon could do if it applied this on a larger scale.
The Six Testing Rooms – The Mind Fragmentation Process
Lumon conducts a series of psychological experiments to test how the human mind reacts to trauma, stress, and extreme conditioning.
Records confirm the existence of six rooms, each linked to a file from the Macrodata Refinement department. Upon entering these rooms, Gemma undergoes a new severance process. As a result, a fragmented version of herself is created, preventing any integration between these identities.
Does this mean that Lumon isn’t just separating memories but actually creating different personalities for each type of experience?
The Known Rooms So Far
Out of the six rooms, three are revealed in this episode:
- Wellington (The Dentist Room) – A brutal pain endurance test. Gemma must endure extreme discomfort, as if trapped in an endless dental procedure.
- Allentown (The Christmas Room) – A conditioning and obedience test. Gemma is forced to write Christmas cards non-stop, repeating the same activity without questioning.
- The Turbulence Room – A fear response test. Gemma faces an extreme danger scenario, as if trapped in a crashing airplane.
The remaining three rooms are still a mystery, but they all follow the same pattern: inducing extreme emotions and monitoring how the brain processes them.
Additionally, there is the Cold Harbor room, which seems to be the final stage of the experiment. However, Gemma has not yet been taken there. What could Lumon be preparing for this last test?
What Is Lumon’s True Goal?
Dr. Mauer tells Gemma that her tests are “shaping a new world.” This statement suggests that these experiments serve as a prototype for something much larger and far more dangerous.
Could Lumon be developing a technology that allows emotions to be reprogrammed on demand?
If Lumon succeeds in fragmenting the human mind into multiple independent versions, it could use this to manipulate emotions, erase traumas, and control memories on a large scale. Absolute control over human consciousness seems closer than ever.
If this technology continues to advance, will corporations decide what we feel, remember, and fear?
Are We Closer to This Reality Than We Think?
Currently, brain stimulation research is exploring ways to erase trauma and modify perceptions. Neuroscience is advancing rapidly, and a future where memories and emotions can be manipulated might not be far off.
If you had the option to erase your bad memories, would you take it?
This episode of Severance raises important questions about the dangers and consequences of a society where our minds can be edited like files on a computer.
